Reconceiving Andrology is a research network led by Dr Devanik Saha, which focuses on Male Reproductive Health (MRH) through a global public health lens.  Throughout history, study of MRH has been largely neglected in medicine and almost all social science disciplines (Almeling, 2020; Daniels, 1993). This network aims to bring together experts to establish MRH research priorities, develop analytical and conceptual tools for research, and advance MRH agendas regionally and globally. The lack of focus on men is a paradox as male bodies, with a predominant focus on white men before 21st century, have served as the standard for medical research, leading to insufficient understandings of women’s illnesses and treatments. On the contrary, women’s reproductive bodies have been overtly medicalised and studied, leading to an equation: men: women :: non-reproductive body: reproductive body. Thus, this network aims to bring together expertise from different disciplines, address this knowledge gap and advance the field of male reproductive health through a global public health lens.

Key questions that we aim to explore

·        What are the most pressing areas of research within the domain of male reproductive health?

·        In what ways can different disciplines collaborate with each other to address the paucity of research on male reproductive health?

·        What are some of the key analytical and conceptual frameworks to study male reproductive health?

·        Can declining fertility and low birth rates be addressed by improving men’s knowledge of and access to reproductive healthcare?

·        What are the social, cultural, political and economic barriers that inhibit men’s access to reproductive health services?

 Expected outcomes from the network

·       Improved knowledge and awareness of key research priorities within male reproductive health

·       Meaningful knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary partnerships and collaborations between ECRs, experienced academics and external organisations

·       Work towards becoming a global reference point for research on male reproductive health through a public health lens

·       Impactful engagement with key regional and national stakeholders, who are informed and equipped to influence policies on male reproductive health within their spatial and geographical contexts

·       Develop the empirical, conceptual and methodological tools for male reproductive health research globally

This network is funded through the K4E Impact Fund Grant awarded to Dr Devanik Saha by the Institute of Lifecourse Development, University of Greenwich. Please contact d.saha@greenwich.ac.uk if you would like to explore any collaborations.
